Do you find yourself making commitments only to get caught in your old habits and patterns of behavior again and again? As Albert Einstein said when observing human behavior, “The thinking that got us into this mess is not sufficient to get us out.”
One morning about 4:30 AM I laid in bed listening to a familiar voice in my head. That voice had come to remind of a little old man on crack cocaine talking trash. This was not a new experience. I had spent many early mornings being the victim of this little imp’s interferance. As far back as I can remember the morning time between 4:30 and 5:30 AM had been my witching hour during which I was savagely reprimand by this voice. I have come to identify the voice as “it.” This relentless nagging voice gave me a travelogue of my past and reminding me of the things I have done and the things I didn’t do and compared them to what I should done and not done. “It” ran on auto play without invitation. I recognized that this wasn’t really me thinking and yet by listening to “it” I always looked at my past with anger and resentment. But that morning it occurred to me that the past is in the past and what happened is what happened. I didn’t have to listen to “it’s” interpretations of those past events any longer. I suddenly realized that “it” was a liar and whatever “it” said meant absolutely nothing. It was like a little Mexican Chihuahua dog barking behind a fence in my neighbor’s yard. Making that choice to stop listening to the “it” and coming to this awareness has set me free.
I have been a counselor and therapist for over 35 years. In the past the way we have done therapy is a client comes in saying, “I am a 1939 Dodge pickup. I have a broken windshield, torn upholstery and 3 bald tires. Give me an oil change a couple of retreads and get me back out on the road.”
When you learn and apply the four tools of altering your language and getting rid of the “it” I guarantee you will leave this experience with a brand new truck and the following results:
- You will gain the tools to eliminate any negative attitude or behavior.
- Your ability to produce results in your life will take off.
- Your power to contribute to life will become amazing even to you.
- Your relationships and your ability to influence others will improve dramatically.
The Four Tools
Tool 1: Recognizing the “it.”
Tool 2: Separating myself from the voice of the “it.”
Tool 3: Getting the past out of the future.
Tool 4: Using the language of Declaring and Acknowledgment to create a new future for yourself and those around you.
